A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.
Good to know
- Mill-town ratter: developed in Yorkshire, England, to catch rats in mills and mines, they still have bold terrier spirit in a tiny body.
- Hair-like coat: the long, silky coat has no undercoat and is similar to human hair; it needs daily brushing, or a short "puppy cut" for easier care.
- Feisty watchdog: confident and alert, they often bark at strangers and noises.
- Feels the cold: their small size and fine coat mean many need a sweater in chilly weather.
- Clever and affectionate: devoted to their people, they respond well to consistent, positive training.
- A low-shedding coat. Some people with allergies find that easier to live with, but no breed is allergen-free.
Getting out with a Yorkshire Terrier
Daily walks and some play keep them content. A mix of park time and easy trails suits them.
