A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Ancient Mexican breed: dating back thousands of years in Mexico, they were valued by the Aztecs, and the name comes from Nahuatl.
  • Hairless or coated: they come in hairless and coated varieties and in three sizes (toy, miniature and standard).
  • Skin care: the hairless variety needs regular bathing, moisturizing and sun protection instead of brushing.
  • Loyal watchdog: calm and devoted with their family, they are alert and often wary of strangers.
  • Calm but active: they enjoy daily walks and play, and are usually quiet and composed indoors.
  • A low-shedding coat. Some people with allergies find that easier to live with, but no breed is allergen-free.

Getting out with a Xoloitzcuintli

Daily walks and some play keep them content. A mix of park time and easy trails suits them.
