A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Fox bolter: bred in England to chase foxes out of their dens for the hunt, they are fearless, energetic and quick to chase.
  • Digging and chasing: they have a strong urge to dig and to chase small animals, so secure fencing and a leash are wise.
  • Wiry coat care: the dense, wiry coat sheds little but needs regular brushing and hand-stripping or clipping.
  • High energy: alert and lively, they need plenty of daily exercise and games to keep them busy.
  • Independent streak: clever but headstrong, they do best with consistent, upbeat training.
  • A low-shedding coat. Some people with allergies find that easier to live with, but no breed is allergen-free.

Getting out with a Wire Fox Terrier

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
