A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Hunting terrier: bred in Wales to hunt foxes, badgers and otters, they are brave, spirited and have a strong prey drive.
  • Natural diggers: like most terriers they love to dig, so a secure fence and supervised garden time help.
  • Wiry coat care: the hard coat sheds little but needs regular brushing and hand-stripping or clipping to keep its shape.
  • Independent minds: clever and sometimes stubborn, they need patient, consistent training that keeps things interesting.
  • Energetic companions: playful and outgoing, they need daily exercise and play.
  • A low-shedding coat. Some people with allergies find that easier to live with, but no breed is allergen-free.

Getting out with a Welsh Terrier

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
