A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • The "Gray Ghost": developed by German nobles at the court of Weimar, they were first used on large game and later as all-round gun dogs.
  • Built for stamina: they need lots of vigorous daily exercise and mental work, or they find their own, often destructive, entertainment.
  • Strong prey drive: cats, squirrels and other small animals can trigger a chase, so a secure fence and solid recall training are important.
  • People-focused: they bond closely with their families and many find long periods alone hard.
  • Low-maintenance coat: the short, sleek gray coat needs only occasional brushing.

Getting out with a Weimaraner

Bred to keep going: they need plenty of exercise every day, like long trail walks, hikes and off-leash play where it's allowed.
