A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Versatile Hungarian hunter: bred to point and retrieve on land and in water, they have plenty of stamina and a strong hunting instinct.
  • A "Velcro" dog: famously affectionate, they want to be close to their people and don't do well left alone for long stretches.
  • High energy: they need vigorous daily exercise such as running, hiking or field work, or they can become restless and destructive.
  • Feels the cold: the short coat has no undercoat, so it needs little grooming but offers little warmth in cold or wet weather.
  • Sensitive learners: quick to learn but easily discouraged, they respond best to gentle, positive training.

Getting out with a Vizsla

Bred to keep going: they need plenty of exercise every day, like long trail walks, hikes and off-leash play where it's allowed.
