A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Born to tree: bred to trail raccoons and hold them up a tree, they follow their nose with total focus, so a leash and a secure fence are a must.
  • Musical voice: they have a loud, ringing bay or bugle that carries a long way, which neighbors may not appreciate.
  • Needs to run: built for long nights of hunting, they need plenty of daily exercise and enjoy scent games and tracking.
  • Easy-care coat: the short, smooth coat needs only weekly brushing.
  • Sociable pack dogs: friendly and easygoing with people and usually good with other dogs, though small pets may trigger their prey drive.

Getting out with a Treeing Walker Coonhound

Bred to keep going: they need plenty of exercise every day, like long trail walks, hikes and off-leash play where it's allowed.
