- All-American toy: developed in the US from Smooth Fox Terriers crossed with toy breeds, they combine terrier spirit with a small, sturdy body.

- Quick learners: bright and eager, they pick up tricks easily and were once popular as circus performers.
- Easy coat, feels the cold: the short, fine coat needs little grooming, but many need a sweater in chilly weather.
- Big-dog attitude: confident and alert, they make keen little watchdogs and can be vocal.
