A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Ancient guardian: bred in the Himalayas to guard monasteries, villages and flocks, they are protective, territorial and aloof with strangers.
  • Night watch: as guardians, many are most alert at night and will bark at unfamiliar sounds after dark, which can be a challenge with neighbors.
  • Independent thinker: bred to make their own decisions, they are not eager to obey and suit experienced owners who train with patience and consistency.
  • Once-a-year coat blow: the heavy double coat sheds little most of the year, then the undercoat comes out heavily once a year and needs daily brushing.
  • Secure fencing needed: their guarding instincts mean a solid fence and careful socialization are essential, and off-leash freedom is rarely safe.

Getting out with a Tibetan Mastiff

Daily walks and some play keep them content. A mix of park time and easy trails suits them.
