A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Viking-era cattle dog: an ancient Swedish farm breed, they are low-set heelers that drove cattle by nipping at their heels, an instinct that can show up around running children.
  • Talkative: they are known for an unusually wide range of barks, yips and "talking" sounds to communicate with their people.
  • Tail lottery: puppies can be born with a full tail, a stub or a natural bobtail, all of which are accepted.
  • Lots of energy: smart and lively, they need daily exercise and jobs to do, and many enjoy herding, agility and other dog sports.
  • Seasonal shedding: the dense, weatherproof double coat is easy to keep but sheds heavily when they blow the undercoat.

Getting out with a Swedish Vallhund

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
