A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Built for thick cover: developed in Sussex, England, as a low-set, sturdy spaniel to hunt slowly and steadily through dense undergrowth.
  • A spaniel that spoke up: unusually for spaniels, they were bred to bark ("give tongue") on scent so hunters could follow them in heavy brush.
  • Frowning face, cheerful dog: their serious, frowning expression hides a calm, affectionate and easygoing family companion.
  • Steady, not speedy: they are calmer than most sporting breeds but still need daily walks and outings to stay fit and content.
  • Golden liver coat: the flat, feathered coat needs regular brushing, and the feathering on ears and legs picks up burrs and tangles.

Getting out with a Sussex Spaniel

Daily walks and some play keep them content. A mix of park time and easy trails suits them.
