A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Original farm all-rounder: the oldest of the three schnauzers, they were German farm dogs that caught rats, guarded the yard and went to market with their owners.
  • Alert watchdog: protective and wary of strangers, they will let you know when someone is at the door.
  • Wiry coat care: the harsh coat sheds little but needs hand-stripping or clipping, and the beard and leg furnishings need regular combing.
  • Smart and strong-willed: quick learners that can be stubborn, they do best with firm, consistent, varied training.
  • Needs a job: energetic and clever, they need daily exercise and mental challenges to stay out of mischief.
  • A low-shedding coat. Some people with allergies find that easier to live with, but no breed is allergen-free.

Getting out with a Standard Schnauzer

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
