Good to know
- Irish farm dogs: bred as all-round farm workers that hunted vermin, guarded and even herded, Wheatens are cheerful, sturdy terriers.
- Silky coat, daily care: the coat sheds little but needs daily brushing and combing to prevent mats, which should be worked out by hand, not cut.
- Energy that lasts: their medium-to-high energy level doesn't fade much with age, so plan on daily exercise together.
- Chasers: with a strong prey drive they'll go after squirrels or even cars, so they need a fenced yard and a leash on walks.
- Smart with an agenda: willful and sensitive, they need consistent training that starts early and never turns harsh.
- A low-shedding coat. Some people with allergies find that easier to live with, but no breed is allergen-free.
Getting out with a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
