• Built for the hunt: bred to bolt foxes from their dens for mounted hunts, they will take off after small animals, so never let them run off lead.
• Born diggers: their instinct to dig can take a toll on lawns and flowerbeds unless they're taught otherwise.
• Alert watchdogs: lively, cheerful and quick to sound the alarm, they can be quite vocal.
• Easy coat: the short, hard coat needs just a weekly brush or rub with a hound glove.
• Terrier-savvy training: some can be jealous of other dogs or small pets, so early socialization and classes with a trainer who knows terriers help.

Getting out with a Smooth Fox Terrier

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
