A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.
Good to know
- A small herder: bred to work livestock on the Shetland Islands, Shelties like to chase moving things, including cars, so a fenced yard and a leash are a must.
- Vocal by nature: they like to bark and are reserved with strangers, which makes them good watchdogs but means teaching a "quiet" cue.
- Heavy double coat: they shed a lot, so brush weekly, more in shedding season, and check behind the ears, elbows and under the tail for mats; shaving isn't recommended.
- Sensitive and eager: highly tuned to the mood of the household and very trainable, Shelties shine in obedience, agility and herding.
Getting out with a Shetland Sheepdog
They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
