A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Welsh otter terriers: bred to dig otters out of their dens, Sealys are sturdy, brave little terriers with a big-dog bark that makes them good watchdogs.
  • Grooming commitment: the coat doesn't shed much but mats easily, needing combing every two or three days plus regular hand-stripping or clipping.
  • Heat-sensitive: they can overheat in hot, humid weather, so plan exercise for early mornings and evenings.
  • Funny and outgoing: affectionate clowns with a sly sense of humor, they're trainable but a bit stubborn and need firm, never harsh, handling.
  • Watch the food bowl: some Sealys guard their food, which is something to work on early with training.

Getting out with a Sealyham Terrier

Daily walks and some play keep them content. A mix of park time and easy trails suits them.
