A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Bred to course deer: these big Scottish sighthounds love to run for the sheer joy of it and may chase any furry animal that bolts, so exercise them on a leash or in a fenced area.
  • Room to run: they need daily chances to run freely in a large, secure space; a walk around the block isn't enough.
  • Couch-loving in old age: calm and dignified indoors, older Deerhounds are hard to pry off the sofa but still need regular daily exercise.
  • Easy coat: the harsh, wiry coat needs only a brush and comb every week or so.
  • Sensitive souls: they respond best to gentle, positive training and need lots of human companionship; they don't do well left alone in a crate all day.

Getting out with a Scottish Deerhound

Daily walks and some play keep them content. A mix of park time and easy trails suits them.
