- The little captain: bred in Belgium as ratters and watchdogs on canal barges and in shops, the name is Flemish for "little captain".
- Natural watchdogs: alert and protective, they can turn into barkers if not taught otherwise.
- Explorers: their instinct to roam means teaching a reliable recall early, and keeping them leashed outside fenced areas.
- Independent learners: they can be a challenge to train, but with patient, persistent owners they can learn almost anything and enjoy obedience and agility.
- Seasonal sheds: the coat needs only weekly brushing, with extra brushing during the shedding season once or twice a year.
Getting out with a Schipperke
They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
