Exercise: About 1 hr a day
A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.
Good to know
- Alpine rescuers: monks at the Great St. Bernard Pass developed these dogs to find and help travelers caught in snow; the brandy barrel around the neck is a myth.
- Moderate exercise: despite their size, a long walk or about half an hour of play a day is usually enough, though they happily join longer hikes.
- Manners matter early: training and socialization are essential so a grown Saint learns not to jump up, bump into children or help itself from the table.
- Twice-yearly sheds: both long- and short-haired coats need weekly brushing, stepping up to daily brushing during the two heavy shedding seasons.
- Family-minded: kind-hearted and eager to please, they want to be with their people and can develop unwanted habits if often left alone for long stretches.
Getting out with a Saint Bernard
They're happy with shorter, easy walks. Keep outings gentle in the heat.
