A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • A big personality: lively and playful, many love dashing around after toys before snuggling up close, and they'll let you know if they feel left out.
  • Two coat types: smooth coats need just a weekly brush, while long coats should be brushed two or three times a week and keep growing their ear fringes into adulthood.
  • Harness, not collar: like other tiny dogs they have delicate necks, so walking on a harness rather than a collar is recommended.
  • Terrier at heart: eager to please and quick to learn, but they can be stubborn and try to run the house, so early socialization and steady training help.
  • Reserved with strangers: affectionate with their own people, they can be a little aloof with those they don't know.

Getting out with a Russian Toy

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
