A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Bred to tree raccoons: developed by American settlers for night hunts, they are tenacious trackers who follow their nose, so keep them leashed unless the area is secure.
  • An athlete's companion: they need plenty of exercise and make good partners for runners, hikers and cyclists.
  • Wash-and-wear coat: the short, sleek coat needs only a weekly rub with a grooming mitt or shedding tool to keep shedding down and the coat shiny.
  • Long ears need checks: those long hound ears should be checked and cleaned of wax and debris every week.
  • Hound voice, family heart: they can be quite vocal, but they're loving, loyal family dogs that usually get along well with children and other dogs.

Getting out with a Redbone Coonhound

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
