A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • A mountain sheepdog: bred to herd flocks in the Pyrenees, they stay alert and ready for action, and need lots of activity plus a job to do.
  • Two face types: rough-faced dogs have a harsher, shaggier coat, while smooth-faced dogs have short hair on the face and a finer coat.
  • Weekly brushing: the outer coat can shed a fair bit and the soft undercoat mats easily, so a weekly brush-through keeps tangles away.
  • Made for dog sports: smart and closely tuned to their owners, they respond well to clicker and reward-based training and enjoy agility, rally and dock diving.

Getting out with a Pyrenean Shepherd

Bred to keep going: they need plenty of exercise every day, like long trail walks, hikes and off-leash play where it's allowed.
