A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • A Hungarian drover: bred to move flocks along narrow country roads, the Pumi is a quick, bold herder with plenty of stamina for work and play.
  • Low-shedding curls: the coat barely sheds, but needs combing every few weeks, a wetting to let the curls spring back, and the occasional tidy trim; blow-drying flattens the curls.
  • Likes the high ground: agile climbers, many love perching up high to keep an eye on things, and they're keen on fetch with balls and discs.
  • A thinker with a voice: they size up new situations, so early socialization matters, and since they enjoy barking it's best not to reward it.
  • A low-shedding coat. Some people with allergies find that easier to live with, but no breed is allergen-free.

Getting out with a Pumi

Bred to keep going: they need plenty of exercise every day, like long trail walks, hikes and off-leash play where it's allowed.
