A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.
Good to know
- Herding through and through: bred to work sheep on the Hungarian plains, many Pulik will still try to herd whatever moves, from other dogs to small children.
- Cords take commitment: the coat can be kept corded, brushed out or clipped, and growing cords means separating the clumping hair by hand, again and again, for months.
- A busy mind: mental exercise matters as much as physical exercise, and they shine in herding, obedience and agility.
- Clever and headstrong: they learn fast but get bored with repetition and like doing things their own way, so training needs to be fair, firm and varied.
- A low-shedding coat. Some people with allergies find that easier to live with, but no breed is allergen-free.
Getting out with a Puli
They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
