A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Flock dog and guardian: bred in Poland to herd sheep by day and guard by night, they can be territorial and wary of strangers.
  • Lots of coat: the shaggy double coat needs thorough weekly brushing, even in a shorter "puppy" clip, to prevent mats and debris.
  • Energetic: they need ample daily exercise and enjoy long walks, hikes and sports like herding, agility or dock diving.
  • Clever and stubborn: they learn quickly but may try to outsmart you, so early training and socialization are recommended.
  • Alert watchdogs: they tend to bark to warn of anything unusual.
  • A low-shedding coat. Some people with allergies find that easier to live with, but no breed is allergen-free.
