A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Big-game hunter: developed in the North Carolina mountains to track and tree bears, they are bold and tireless in the field.
  • Strong prey drive: they should always be walked on leash, since their hunting instincts can take over.
  • Expect a voice: like other coonhounds, they can be vocal, and owners should be ready to hear them in the house at times.
  • Easy-care coat: the short, glossy coat, often brindle, needs only a weekly brushing.
  • Needs a busy mind: smart and energetic, a bored Plott will find its own entertainment, so daily exercise and training help.

Getting out with a Plott Hound

Bred to keep going: they need plenty of exercise every day, like long trail walks, hikes and off-leash play where it's allowed.
