A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Royal lapdog: bred as companions in the Chinese imperial court, they are dignified, independent and sometimes called "opinionated".
  • Modest exercise: they are fairly sedate and are happy with a walk and some indoor play.
  • Significant grooming: the thick double coat sheds seasonally and needs at least an hour of brushing each week to prevent mats.
  • Better with older kids: they are affectionate with their people but not suited to roughhousing with young children.
  • Little watchdogs: always alert, they will let you know when someone arrives.

Getting out with a Pekingese

They're happy with shorter, easy walks. Keep outings gentle in the heat.
