A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Fox hunter: bred in England to run with foxhounds and follow foxes underground, they have a strong prey drive and love to dig.
  • High energy: they need an active owner and daily outlets, and won't be content to lie in a corner for long.
  • Keep them leashed: the urge to chase can be irresistible, so on-leash outings or a secure fence are a must.
  • Two coat types: smooth or broken (rough), both need regular brushing, and rough coats also need plucking or clipping.
  • Independent thinkers: they were bred to solve problems on their own, so training needs consistency, patience, fun and a sense of humor.

Getting out with a Parson Russell Terrier

Bred to keep going: they need plenty of exercise every day, like long trail walks, hikes and off-leash play where it's allowed.
