A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Little ratter: bred to keep down rodents and to run with packs on fox hunts, they still have strong hunting instincts.
  • Leash or fence: their urge to chase means they should be walked on a leash or let loose only in a securely fenced area.
  • Sociable and eager: bred to work alongside other dogs, they are usually more outgoing and keen to please than the typical terrier.
  • Hand-stripped coat: hand-stripping keeps the harsh, weather-resistant coat's color and texture, while clipping tends to soften and fade it.
  • Prick ears: the Norwich's upright ears are the easiest way to tell it from its drop-eared cousin, the Norfolk Terrier.

Getting out with a Norwich Terrier

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
