A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Moose hunter: bred to track moose for long distances and hold them at bay with barking, they have great stamina and plenty to say.
  • Off-leash wanderers: they hunted far ahead of the hunter and made their own decisions, so they tend to roam if given the chance and are best exercised on lead.
  • "Tumbleweeds" of fur: the thick double coat sheds heavily in season, when brushing a few minutes a day keeps it under control.
  • Quick but easily bored: they learn fast, but repeating the same drill quickly loses their interest, so keep training varied.
  • All-weather workers: bred to track for long hours in all weather over rough ground, and most also love to swim.

Getting out with a Norwegian Elkhound

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
