Good to know
- Farm dog of the Vikings: the name comes from the Norwegian word for homestead, and they were bred to herd, guard and help out on farms.
- High-energy worker: bred to herd for hours, many Buhunds need vigorous daily exercise and love running, fetch and long hikes.
- Clean, easy coat: the weather-resistant double coat sheds dirt well and needs brushing a few times a week, more when they blow their undercoat once or twice a year.
- Food-motivated learners: they are easier to train than many spitz breeds, but their independent streak means short, reward-based sessions work best.
- Alert watchdogs: as natural guardians they are quick to bark and let you know when something is going on.
Getting out with a Norwegian Buhund
They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
