Good to know
- Ratter at heart: bred to hunt rats and bolt foxes, Norfolks have a strong prey drive and can be a danger to small pets like hamsters or ferrets.
- Friendlier than most terriers: created to work in packs, they tend to be more sociable with people and other dogs than many terrier breeds.
- Hand-stripped coat: the wiry double coat stays its best with hand-stripping, so plan to learn it or find a groomer who does it.
- Lead and fence: with lots of energy and a love of chasing, they should be walked on leash and kept in a securely fenced yard.
- Folded ears set them apart: the Norfolk and the prick-eared Norwich were once one breed, and the drop ears are the easiest way to tell them apart.
Getting out with a Norfolk Terrier
They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
