Good to know
- Born for the water: bred to work on fishing boats and rescue people from the sea, Newfs have partially webbed feet and most love to swim.
- Gentle giants: they are known for a sweet, patient nature and are usually very fond of children, though their size means supervision with small kids.
- Expect drool: Newfoundlands are among the droolier breeds, so many owners keep a towel handy.
- Heavy coat care: the thick coat needs a thorough weekly brushing to prevent mats, and daily brushing when they shed heavily, usually twice a year.
- Draft-dog strength: they were also used to haul nets and carts, and many still enjoy carting, water work and long walks with their people.
Getting out with a Newfoundland
Daily walks and some play keep them content. A mix of park time and easy trails suits them.
