A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Treeing hunter: developed in rural America to hunt squirrel, raccoon and bigger game, they track and tree prey.
  • Strong voice: they bark clearly while hunting, and that bark carries a long way.
  • Eager to please: they are intelligent and trainable, but their strong hunting drive means a secure fence or leash.
  • Easy coat: the short coat needs only occasional brushing.
  • Family and watch dog: given enough exercise and company, they make loyal companions and alert watchdogs.

Getting out with a Mountain Cur

Bred to keep going: they need plenty of exercise every day, like long trail walks, hikes and off-leash play where it's allowed.
