A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Guardian by nature: bred as estate guardians, they are loyal and protective, but usually calm and gentle with family.
  • Drool happens: expect some drooling, especially after drinking or eating.
  • Early training is key: they grow very big and strong, so start obedience and socialization in puppyhood.
  • Moderate exercise: daily walks suit them; avoid strenuous exercise in heat.
  • Short coat: the short double coat sheds, with heavier seasonal shedding, and needs weekly brushing.

Getting out with a Mastiff

They're happy with shorter, easy walks. Keep outings gentle in the heat.
