A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Fox hunter: bred in England's Lake District to hunt foxes that raided sheep, they are bold, confident little terriers.
  • Wiry coat: the hard coat sheds little but needs regular brushing and either hand-stripping or clipping.
  • Terrier instincts: many love to dig and chase, so a secure yard and leash are a good idea.
  • Smart and independent: they learn quickly but have a mind of their own, so keep training fun and consistent.
  • A low-shedding coat. Some people with allergies find that easier to live with, but no breed is allergen-free.

Getting out with a Lakeland Terrier

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
