A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Color that changes: puppies are born black and the coat gradually clears to blue-gray, usually by around two years old.
  • All-purpose farm dog: bred in Ireland for hunting vermin, herding and guarding, they are versatile, spirited workers.
  • Soft, low-shedding coat: the wavy coat sheds very little but needs frequent brushing and regular trimming to stay neat.
  • Watch the other dogs: they can be assertive with other dogs, so early socialization and supervised introductions help.
  • A low-shedding coat. Some people with allergies find that easier to live with, but no breed is allergen-free.

Getting out with a Kerry Blue Terrier

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
