A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Cat-like manners: they often wash their faces with their paws and like to perch on high spots such as sofa backs.
  • Companion through and through: bred as a lapdog for Japanese nobility, they are affectionate with family and happiest close by.
  • Light grooming: the silky single coat needs brushing about once a week, with a little more care behind the ears and on the feathering.
  • Keep them cool: with a short, flat face they don't handle heat well, so keep exercise gentle on hot days.
  • The "Chin spin": many show excitement by spinning in circles, a quirk owners often see at mealtimes.

Getting out with a Japanese Chin

They're happy with shorter, easy walks. Keep outings gentle in the heat.
