A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Feels the cold: a very short, thin coat and little body fat mean they appreciate a sweater and warm bedding in chilly weather.
  • Chasing instinct: as small sighthounds they may bolt after squirrels or birds, so keep them leashed or in secure areas.
  • Easy coat: the short, fine coat barely needs grooming beyond an occasional wipe-down or bath.
  • Patient housetraining: many are slow to housetrain, especially in cold or wet weather, so consistency and patience pay off.
  • Lap and sprint: affectionate couch companions that still enjoy a chance to run flat out in a safe, enclosed space.
  • A low-shedding coat. Some people with allergies find that easier to live with, but no breed is allergen-free.

Getting out with a Italian Greyhound

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
