A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Sighthound at heart: bred to hunt wolves and other game by sight, they may chase anything that runs, so a securely fenced area matters.
  • Gentle giant: they are typically calm, kind and patient with family, and are not generally suited to guard work.
  • Space to stretch: they need daily walks and room to gallop, and do best where their large size can move freely.
  • Rough coat: the wiry, rough coat needs only weekly brushing and the occasional tidy-up.

Getting out with a Irish Wolfhound

Daily walks and some play keep them content. A mix of park time and easy trails suits them.
