A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Bird dogs: bred to find and point game birds, they love to run and need lots of vigorous daily exercise.
  • Puppyish for years: outgoing and playful, they mature slowly and keep their exuberance well into adulthood.
  • Friendly to all: typically sociable with people and other dogs, which makes them poor guard dogs but good family companions.
  • Feathered coat: the silky coat needs regular brushing to prevent tangles, plus occasional trimming of the feathering.

Getting out with a Irish Setter

Bred to keep going: they need plenty of exercise every day, like long trail walks, hikes and off-leash play where it's allowed.
