A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Irish gun dogs: bred to find and set game birds, they have great stamina and need plenty of daily running and activity.
  • Good-humored and people-oriented: affectionate and friendly, though their boisterous play may be too much for toddlers.
  • Train young: gentle and sensitive but can be stubborn, so start consistent, positive training early.
  • Feathered coat: the silky coat needs brushing several times a week, with extra care on the feathering and ears.

Getting out with a Irish Red and White Setter

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
