A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Iceland's own breed: a Nordic spitz used to herd sheep and other livestock, they are agile and hardy, built for rough country.
  • Born barkers: they use barking to herd, and many will sound off at visitors, other animals and even birds flying overhead.
  • People-loving: cheerful and friendly, they want to be with their family and don't do well left alone for long.
  • Thick double coat: short- or long-haired, the weatherproof coat sheds seasonally and needs regular brushing; many also have double dewclaws on the hind legs.

Getting out with a Icelandic Sheepdog

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
