A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Pack hounds: bred to hunt hare in packs, they are sociable and usually enjoy the company of other dogs.
  • Nose first: a strong scenting instinct means they follow trails, so keep them leashed or in a secure yard.
  • Vocal: like many hounds they bay and howl, especially when bored or left alone.
  • Active but easy-care: they need lots of daily exercise, but the short coat needs only weekly brushing.

Getting out with a Harrier

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
