A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Swiss draft dogs: bred to drive cattle, pull carts and guard farms, many still enjoy carting and other working activities.
  • Slow to mature: they keep a puppyish, boisterous streak for a long time, so early leash and manners training is important.
  • Alert family dogs: devoted to their people and watchful, they will bark to alert you.
  • Shedding double coat: the short, dense coat needs weekly brushing and more during seasonal shedding.

Getting out with a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

Daily walks and some play keep them content. A mix of park time and easy trails suits them.
