A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Livestock guardians: bred to guard sheep from predators in the Pyrenees mountains, they are calm and watchful, and protective of their flock and family.
  • Night-time barkers: bred to bark off predators after dark, they often bark at night, which matters if you have close neighbors.
  • Independent minds: bred to make decisions alone, they can be slow to obey and tend to roam, so a secure fence and leash are essential.
  • Weatherproof coat: the thick double coat is made for cold and sheds heavily, especially seasonally; note the double dewclaws on the hind legs when trimming nails.

Getting out with a Great Pyrenees

Daily walks and some play keep them content. A mix of park time and easy trails suits them.
