A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Hard-working Irish terriers: used for vermin and badger work, and as turnspit dogs that ran a wheel to turn meat roasting over a fire.
  • Calmer terriers: gentler and less excitable than many terriers, though still bold and spirited when roused.
  • Deep bark: generally fairly quiet, but when they do bark their deep voice makes them sound like a much bigger dog.
  • Coat care: the wiry double coat should be hand-stripped of dead hair a few times a year, or kept tidy by a groomer.

Getting out with a Glen of Imaal Terrier

Daily walks and some play keep them content. A mix of park time and easy trails suits them.
