A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Bavarian working dogs: originally used to drive cattle and guard farms and breweries, and later used in police work, they are powerful and protective.
  • Needs serious exercise: energetic and intelligent, they need daily vigorous activity and a job, or they may become destructive.
  • Strong-willed learners: they need consistent, confident training and thorough socialization from an early age.
  • Grooming commitment: the wiry coat and beard need regular brushing plus clipping or hand-stripping, and the beard needs cleaning after meals.
  • A low-shedding coat. Some people with allergies find that easier to live with, but no breed is allergen-free.

Getting out with a Giant Schnauzer

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
