A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Reindeer herders: bred by the Sámi to herd reindeer above the Arctic Circle, they keep a herding instinct and may try to round up children or other pets.
  • Friendly and empathetic: known for being gentle and very people-oriented, they bond closely with their families.
  • Built for the cold: the thick, weatherproof double coat sheds heavily, especially when the undercoat blows, and needs regular brushing; keep them cool in hot weather.
  • Willing to speak up: as working herders they use their voice, so expect some barking and teach a quiet cue early.

Getting out with a Finnish Lapphund

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
