A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Cattle drovers: the smallest of the four Swiss mountain dogs was bred to move cattle, and many still try to herd people, sometimes nipping at heels.
  • Built for work: athletic and energetic, they need daily vigorous exercise and a job, such as training, herding or dog sports, to stay settled.
  • Loyal but watchful: devoted to their family and often wary of strangers, so early socialization helps them stay confident rather than suspicious.
  • Wash-and-wear coat: the short, dense double coat is easy to groom with weekly brushing, though it sheds, more so in season.

Getting out with a Entlebucher Mountain Dog

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
